Welcome to Our SWK 254 Blog-Web Page!

Hello Students of SWK 254:

Together we begin a semester of new learning and growth....The purpose of the Blog, is to provide our class with a space to respond to weekly readings and class sessions, in ways that will positively draw us to a better understanding of ourselves and others. We can post our questions, comments and stories. I encourage you to respond throughout the course to the many activities and readings. This activity will assist in developing personal awareness and insight into your reactions, thoughts, feelings that are experienced during class, from readings, and related activities, and to communicate on a personal level w/ your fellow students and course instructor.

Hope Abounds,
Mayra Lopez-Humphreys

I just wanted to say I am so excited about this class! My father is the Director of Patient Family Services at our hospital in short he's a social worker and oversees all of our social workers and case coordinators. That being said, most of my life has been surrounded by social work. I myself have worked with Hispanic refugees, in hospitals, and I am a Domestic Violence Victims Advocate. My family always emphasized the importance of diversity, and really jumping in and getting to know people different from me.

So, I just completed the survey and it was most interesting. I am looking forward to sharing our thoughts about the things that we have never said out loud before. Of course with some monitoring would be awesome. May the Lord continue to work in every person, and educational tool that he blesses us with each and every second of our lives.

Okay so this is the first time I blog so please be patient with me.
First and foremost thank you Professor for letting me part of this class. I am also very excited about this class. This course was referred to me by my fiancé and sitting in the first session definitely proved to be a great reference. I look forward to "learn to unlearning what I have learned!" :)

I can honestly say that from sitting and listening on the first day of class, I am very interested in seeing how God will use this class the change my way of thinking. Though it will be hard because I don't usually like to step out of my comfort zone, I believe that I can take a risk and go beyond my borders. I'm excited to see how everything plays out, and hopefully my way of thinking will have changed by the time the class is over.

This is frist time I blog so still I am having troble with this.
Anyway I am so excited and also rittle bit nervous as usual when I start new faces. However this is so great opportunity to learn about How to understand other culture and how to interact with them.
First impression from this class is realizing that I am so narrowed person. I want to be wide person.

I have learned so much from this course on how the backbone of Americas society has been constructed. This class continues to help me in the understanding of my own place in life and for that I am very inspired. I also am awakened to the huge amounts of oppression that exists and am quite saddened by it's huge existence and hope to make a difference in helping others recognize it too. I say thank to Prof. Humphreys for all her wonderful teaching and helping me to understand so very much.

The end is coming soon. This class has reality for discrimnational pespective becasue each of student in class have experienced any kind of discrimination either as a discrimnator or victims. So for me it was really great time for look myself how was my responces for the discrimination issues. I was thinking about myself that I am not a discriminator but unfortunately I was one of discriminator for other people. So God told me that I need to pray deeply for this issues. As a social worker, this is essencial factor for helping others.

I could not stop think about what the First Nations People went through. The thought of the Americans and Brithish intentionaly spreading diseases among the Native Americans is horrible. I do pray that they will be able to deal with their unresolved greif. I really feel the pain that they have experienced.
