Welcome to Our SWK 254 Blog-Web Page!

Hello Students of SWK 254:

Together we begin a semester of new learning and growth....The purpose of the Blog, is to provide our class with a space to respond to weekly readings and class sessions, in ways that will positively draw us to a better understanding of ourselves and others. We can post our questions, comments and stories. I encourage you to respond throughout the course to the many activities and readings. This activity will assist in developing personal awareness and insight into your reactions, thoughts, feelings that are experienced during class, from readings, and related activities, and to communicate on a personal level w/ your fellow students and course instructor.

Hope Abounds,
Mayra Lopez-Humphreys

Wow! If someone had asked me few minutes earlier why I decided to change my major at the 11th hour of my schooling in NYACK, I would have been dumbfounded. But, after the course introduction by Professor Humphreys, it became so vivid to me that this is where I belong. This is what I need; my passion, my calling, my pursuit. I knew it when I saw it. Amazing!

Awe!...There are certain things you can associate the word amazing, awesome, breath-taking and one of them is this class. The introduction to the class; Understanding diverse population has already drew me in front of the mirror of reflection to examine whether I really have any biases, prejudices that may hinder me from actually see kingdom pursuit being effective in my life. A wonderful introduction to the world of Social Work.

I am so excited about this class. Its as if time flew by as Professor Humphreys was speaking. She makes it so real and you could see how passionate she is about diversity. I have already begun to take a different approach when dealing with other cultures and even my own. I definitely have much to learn and want to improve my cultural competency.

I agree with everything everyone had to say so far. The beginning of this class has been great so far and I've learned things about myself that I never knew...in just two classes!

I'm really seeing Social Work in a "real life" essence. Now it's real to me, not just something I'm learning about in a class. I can see myself applying these concepts in real life. It's amazing!

It's amazing...how the social learning theory constructed by Albert Bandurn explains that Learning occurs observationally and how that plays a roll on how we think today, and how because we have observed cultural trends, shared expectations and rules growing up and saw and understood them to be right; we hinder growth in our lives and make ignorant and faulty statements about people. I'm guilty because we do it unconsciously and what I really love about this course as we progress is that not only do we progress as individuals or social workers but we get to come to grip with our privileges; if we choose to take a stance on what the text book explains on how we ought to take our position; to see our uniqueness and than use critical consciousness to bring us to the place to embrace our similarities but differences as well. In our relationships we will experience interconnectedness, interrelatedness and interdependency as valuable human beings made in the image of the Grand Weaver.
