Together we begin a semester of new learnings....
The purpose of the Blog, is to provide our class with a space to respond to weekly readings and class sessions, in ways that will positively draw us to a better understanding of ourselves and others. We can post our questions, comments and stories. I encourage you to respond throughout the course to the many activities and readings. This activity will assist in developing personal awareness and insight into your reactions, thoughts, feelings that are experienced during class, from readings, and related activities, and to communicate on a personal level w/ the your fellow students and course instructor.

Broken for community

Unless we are broken, we are of no use to God. And unless we are broken, we are of no use to the community of believers of which we are a part. Hardly any of us can go to his or her Christian community and say, "This is my body which is broken for you. I am laying all my professional skills, abilities, and economic resources at your disposal. Take them and use them as you see fit." We cannot say this, because we are not broken. We are too proud to give our lives away to people who are not perfect. We don't want to lose ourselves for sinners. We want to find the perfect person and the perfect community, but we never find them.
So, like Judas, we make only a partial commitment to the body of believers to which we belong, and we find our identity in our rebellion from them. Unlike Paul who clearly saw his identity - "an apostle of Jesus Christ" - in terms of his function in the body, we see our identity in how we are different from the body and opposed to it.
If we are following Jesus, we cannot wait for the perfect community. It was while we were yet sinners that Christ allowed his body to be broken for us. Jesus lays the foundation for community life in the midst of betrayal: "the Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread..." He gave thanks and broke it and gave it. Our commitment to one another in community can be no less than his: "This is my body broken for you."
The first day of this course was very interesting. This course will not be easy and will be challenging but that is what college is all about. I am excited to be taking this class and I already sense that taking this class will benifit me in so many ways.

I am also excited about this course, for a long class it is interestiong and will certainly keep me awake. I like the topics and i hope to learn more and share more as we go along. diversity is an important and very essential topic to discuss and it takes people willing to learn help and make a difference to be the teacher and to be the students of this course.

First off, I'd like to say I really enjoy professor's Humphreys class
One of the things that really caught my attention in last weeks lesson was, How we can get across to our client without offending them and making our point get through?
As a christian this is hard. How can we make a point when we dont agree with a client and our job is to adjust a situation to the clients comfort level. What happens when we are not comfortable with what were doing because it goes against our belief. This is something that really terrifies me. How could I let somebody knowo what I think and not offend them?
I really have no specific answer but I would try my best to suggest what I think and let the individual decide.

I have been waiting to attend this class for two years. I thought it would be about becoming more familiar with people from other cultures, and how to relate to them. All that is correct however, it is about relating and interacting with them yet, also going deeper within myslef to discover who I am; and enable me to unravel and clarify myself better in order to become effective in relating to other individuals different from myself yet share the smae spirit of humanity
